X is for Xylem

Admittedly, at first all I could think of for X was Xylophone!  But I do not have a xylophone, so I had to rack my brain a bit!   Then it dawned on me that I took this picture with my microscope for Apologia Biology, Module 14….all it needed was a label!  Do you remember Xylem and Phloem?  In case you’ve gotten a bit rusty on your plant biology, Xylem is the stuff that carries the water and dissolved minerals up to the leaves of a plant.  In this picture of the Zea Mays (Corn) Root, it is where those nice empty looking circles are.  (Look at the lower left corner of the letter X.)

And now I’m on to conquer the letter “Y”…..hmmmm

W is for Wren

As a child, I always enjoyed playing in the backyard of our then, new house.  Now as an adult, what was once a nice collection of small Maples, White Pines, Apple and Birch, has really become a haven for all kinds of birds, squirrel, chipmunk, rabbits and occasionally even deer!   This spring, a family of Wren set up shop in this sweet bird house which was lovingly hand painted by my Great Niece.   After a few years of weathering, it has taken on a wonderful shabby-chic appearance.

With a little time and patience, I was able to catch this Momma heading in with a little dinner.

V is for View

This photo was taken in St. John, USVI just after a nice tropical shower.  On this island, there seems to be a great view around every corner.

 U is for Underwater!

This photo was taken at the Artic Ring of Life exhibit at the Detroit Zoo.  The polar bears were not swimming that day, but the seals were very active.
